According to Microsoft, a staggering 97% of ransomware infections manage to infiltrate a system within a mere four hours, with some achieving this in as little as 45 minutes.
Exploiting the vulnerabilities of educational institutions’ often outdated systems and their limited cybersecurity resources, threat actors recognise the challenges these institutions face in safeguarding both legacy systems and student data. Concurrently, insurers have recently heightened their criteria for qualifying for cyber insurance policies, posing an additional formidable hurdle for administrators and IT personnel.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s (ACSC) Essential 8 (E8) have long been positioned as a beacon for organisations to shield themselves against a multitude of cyber threats.
In recent years, the Government has promoted these prioritised mitigation strategies as the cyber security standard for all organisations, and has dedicated substantial resources to the promotion and adoption of the E8 across the Federal Government. Nonetheless, the E8 does carry certain limitations and while their implementation can be instrumental in preventing threats, it often presents formidable challenges and substantial costs for most organisations to implement these mitigations effectively.
This presentation will evaluate the efficacy of the E8 in achieving ICT Uplift and discuss what (if any) additional or alternative cyber security mitigations/guidance may be needed to enhance the Government’s ICT posture.
