The new Microsoft Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, built for the AI-ready workplace on Snapdragon X2

Microsoft has refreshed two of its most portable business devices. The Surface Pro for Business 12-inch and the Surface Laptop for Business 13-inch, both 2nd Edition, now run on the Snapdragon X2 generation, and the 12-inch Surface Pro also gains built-in 5G. These are the smaller 2nd Edition devices that sit alongside the larger Surface Laptop we wrote about earlier this year.

The interesting shift here is in how Microsoft talks about these devices. While the Snapdragon X2 delivers additional performance gains (more on that below), the focus is on how the devices shape everyday work through four themes that matter for a Microsoft-standardised fleet. These are AI in everyday work, hybrid AI, security, and trust.

AI in the flow of everyday work

Both devices are Copilot+ PCs, which means a dedicated neural processing unit handles AI work directly on the device.

Features such as Recall, Improved Windows Search, Live Captions with real-time translation, and Click to Do run locally within the tools your people already use. A field worker can search for a document by describing it rather than recalling its name. A frontline team can caption and translate a conversation in real time, or an admin user can act on text or an image on screen without interrupting their workflow. None of this asks people to change how they work, which is usually the hardest part of any technology rollout.

For the more mobile users these devices are built for, this is the practical version of AI transformation that supports day-to-day work.

Running the right work in the right place with hybrid AI

This is where the on-device processing starts to matter commercially.

Cloud AI gives you scale and access to the largest models, while on-device AI gives you speed, privacy, responsiveness and the ability to keep working offline. A Copilot+ PC lets you run the right workload in the right place, and this is now becoming a cost question rather than a technical one.

Our own Steve Bedwell recently unpacked what Copilot Cowork’s move to usage-based billing means for organisations, and why cost governance now needs to be part of the AI conversation. As more cloud AI shifts to metered billing, everyday tasks that can run on the device rather than in the cloud become worth considering. This can reduce reliance on metered cloud calls and is especially useful if you have sensitive data that needs to stay on the device rather than sending it out for processing.

Given these are compact devices aimed at mobile, education, and back-office users, the hybrid story here focuses on everyday efficiency and data control rather than heavy local model building.

Security built-in from the first boot

As AI becomes part of everyday work, every device becomes part of your security perimeter. A device that is secure the moment it is switched on is no longer a nice-to-have, its essential.

Surface is built end-to-end by Microsoft, the hardware, firmware, operating system and management tooling are designed to work together. Key Windows security protections are enabled by default, and the devices ship as Secured-core PCs with Microsoft Pluton and a hardware root of trust in place from first boot. The security work also extends below the operating system, into the firmware and embedded controller, using modern memory-safe approaches.

For organisations, the value is simple. A consistent, Microsoft-built security baseline is easier to deploy, manage and defend than a mixed fleet of devices secured in different ways.

A device you can trust to transform on

Trust is where it all comes together.

Because these are Microsoft-built devices, they bring the device, Windows, Microsoft 365, and Copilot experiences into a single stack, managed with the tools your IT team already uses. Intune and the Surface Management Portal provide clear visibility across the fleet, keeping deployment, updates, and support consistent as you scale. Add Microsoft’s Responsible AI approach and Surface’s more repairable, longer-lived design, and you have a device foundation built for the long term.

What the X2 generation actually brings

The Snapdragon X2 is the next-generation silicon for these devices, delivering improved performance and efficiency over the previous generation, along with the phone-like battery behaviour ARM-based Surface devices are known for. When you unplug, performance holds, and the battery does not nosedive, exactly what mobile and field users need.
The 12-inch Pro adds optional 5G, so people can open the device and get on with work without hunting for Wi-Fi. Both devices feature a Copilot+ PC-class NPU, which makes the on-device AI story above possible.

Where these devices fit

Education has been a strong fit for Snapdragon Surface devices, and that continues here. The 5G option on the 12-inch Surface Pro also makes it well suited to field and mobile workers who spend their day away from a desk, while being a capable companion device for corporate users who want a Windows device in a tablet form factor.
The 13-inch Surface Laptop suits a different user again. For back-office and administrative staff who work at a desk with an external monitor, it is a right-sized, cost-effective option that is more capable than people expect once they test it, without the specifications or footprint of a larger machine.
