Important Licensing Update for Microsoft Surface Hub

Scott Gosling

Microsoft have just announced an important policy enforcement notice for Microsoft Surface Hub licensing.

Effective July 1st, 2023, customers who activated Teams Rooms devices, including Microsoft Surface Hubs, and executives in personal mode using a user license (Microsoft 365 and Office 365 A, E, G, etc.) will be blocked from sign in.

For those of you within this criterion, you must procure and provision a Teams Rooms Pro ($40) or Teams Rooms Basic ($0 / max 25 devices) license to continue service before July 1st, 2023. If you have legacy Microsoft Teams Rooms Standard or Teams Rooms Premium subscription licenses, you can reserve seats under your existing agreement to remain compliant.

The requirement follows the announcement last September of new Teams Rooms Pro and Basic licenses, including changes to user subscription licenses for Teams Rooms deployments.

If you still rely on user subscription license for the Hub Device account, you have until July 1st, 2023, to procure and provision a Teams Room license. Otherwise, Surface Hub will be blocked from signing in until a Teams Rooms license is assigned.

We understand licensing changes can be complex and difficult to navigate. Reach out to a Data#3 Surface Solution Specialist to learn how to best manage this change in licensing at your organisation.
